A Boo Hoo Hoo to Bullying.

In an economic climate where Britain is clawing it’s way out of the deepest recession since the 1930’s and with a General Election looming, I’m so pleased to see the front pages of the national press being governed by the ‘Bullying at No 10’ story,(apart from Cheryl & Ashley, natch).

For God’s sakes, will the staff of Number 10 with wounded sensibilities ‘man up’ and actually, err, confront the problem and the person? No, that’s way too sensible a solution. Tell you what? Although we’re adult civil servants and/or staff at Downing Street, we’ll ring the National Bullying Helpline? If ever there was a cry for help, then this surely is it – As in, “Help Me I need a Personality Transplant as I’m A Grown Up Wimp”.

Which brings me to the question of personal responsibility. We appear to be breeding a nation of adult scardey cats, afraid to take responsibility and rationally confront issues. Also, there’s the ever frustrating ‘pass the buck’ attitude by a plethora of people in the service industry – “Sorry mate, not my job, you’ll have to ask…”. Where’s the drive to service or go the extra mile and get things done well. Is it any wonder that a perfectionist or a pleaser in a high office or management position is seen to ‘lose it’ occasionally in a frustrated attempt to impart responsibility, to encourage others to get it right? The desire to deliver the very best for the customer, is, after all, what drives good businesses and government.

And surely, the most laughable point of the ‘Bullying at No 10’ scandal surrounds Mrs Christine Pratt. Who in the world would trust their secrets with the leader and founder of a national charity who was previously a HR consultant? Everyone who has worked in an office environment knows that Human Resources area should be retitled Human Remains.

The fact that Christine Pratt’s National Bullying Helpline charity’s offices are in the same building in Swindon as the local Conservative Party headquarters has also raised questions, but Mrs Pratt has insisted her organisation is not political.

With HR mentors like this, there is only one solution. Man up people of Britain and grow some kahunas. It worked for the lion in The Wizard of Oz.

It’s the centre of government, stressful, high-powered. Always been sweary, I’d question whether sensitive types should be there. My uncle was in the Cabinet Office, I gather he himself once swore at the PM of the time. Didn’t lose him his job…
