Chutzpah’s Weekly Barometer

by Katie on April 15, 2010

A light hearted look back over the past week’s good, bad and indifferent including the “don’t even go there’s”.

Barrio Central Love this new spot in Poland Street. Great caipirinhas, attentive waiting staff and, I’m telling you, the best chicken tacos ever, as well as a dainty little ‘hut’ in the basement. Open till 1am and new to Soho, this is one to visit before it gets too popular.

Ron Barcelo Rum Err… I know there’s a bit of an alcohol theme this week, but bear with me. Normally one to balk at strong spirits (unless in mixers) like whisky, tequila and rum, this brand surprised me. Made in the Dominican Republic, it’s smooth as silk and slips down easily – Ooh Mrs! Try the Ron Barcelo Imperial at Trailer Happiness in Notting Hill.

Paper Eyelashes First nail art, now this. So delicate and impactful. Created by Chinese designer, Chunwei Liao, they’re inspired by the Chinese art of paper cutting. There’s a meaning for each pattern of lashes: Check out ‘horses’ meaning big success. Available from Apartment C in Marylebone High Street, W1. (

People watching at gallery openings Sometimes more interesting than the art.

Women (30+) who talk like children Think Sharon Osbourne, Janet Ellis and others. I used to think it weird, now I just think it’s plain creepy

Moths The little dusty blighters are back, chomping on everything we value most dearly. I used to use mothballs (I actually like the smell as it reminds me of my grandmother and her furs) but this time I’m going with Total Wardrobe Care’s natural wardrobe spray. (

Re. the party leaders’ wives’ outfit choices. Credit the UK female electorate with a bit more intelligence, please.
