On Thursday 17th June, Mark Powell, man about town and tailor par excellence, celebrates the opening of his first shop in 20 years on London’s Marshall Street, W1.

Hip gentleman’s tailoring meets art, with the night also celebrating the launch of a unique photographic exhibition: ‘A Celebration of Style: Cool London Through the Photographer’s Lens’ featuring works by Barry Lategan, Derrick Santini, Romano Cagnoni, John Stoddart, Iain McKell, Bruce Fleming, Patrizio Di Renzo and Dan Farson, which will run for one month in the gallery below the shop (17th June -17th July 2010).

The event is set to merge die-hard Soho stalwarts, fashion groupies, celebs and the simply well dressed. Powell has built a strong and established following over the decades and has dressed a distinguished host of names including Bianca Jagger and Naomi Campbell, actors George Clooney, Harrison Ford and Keira Knightley, and music legends David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, George Michael and, most recently, Paul Weller. He has designed costumes for film including Absolute Beginners, Shopping, Gangster No.1 and Danny Dyer’s latest release Pimp, though I wouldn’t want to boast too much about that flippety flop. Mark has also collaborated on menswear ranges for Michiko Koshino, Mulberry, PPQ and his own Mark Powell Autograph range for Marks and Spencer.

The Exhibition ‘A Celebration of Style: Cool London Through the Photographer’s Lens’ features work by notable and well respected photographers from the fashion world that Powell has personally worked with over the past 25 years. Work will include: Barry Lategan’s iconic picture of Twiggy from 1966 – the picture which made her career, Derrick Santini’s shot of Lily Allen, Romano Cagnoni’s Mary Quant at work in her Chelsea studio, John Stoddart’s Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, Iain McKell’s portrait of Lily Cole, Bruce Fleming’s captivating image of Jimi Hendrix, Patrizio Di Renzo – Powell’s trusted fashion photographer – and the late Dan Farson – Soho habitue.

All Photographs will be for sale on the night and for one month thereafter, with 10% of all proceeds from the exhibition going to Powell’s charity of choice: Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Expect well dressed mayhem and fashion antics. Isn’t that always the case in Soho?

Images featured include Lily Cole by Iain McKell, Jimi Hendrix by Bruce Fleming, Pierce Brosnan by John Stoddart and a Mark Powell fashion image of woman in suit by Patrizio Di Renzo. Exhibition curated by Sandra Higgins.
