The fund raising, HAIRraising* initiative is to host a gallery exhibition of  ‘HARE’ canvases from April 16-May 8 at the Heartbreak Gallery, 17 Bulstrode Street, London, W1.

Cut, coloured and styled HARE portraits have been created by the likes of Tracey Emin, Stella McCartney, Nicole Farhi, Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Catherine Tate, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Jamie Oliver.  This worthy appeal is the brainchild of hairdresser Michael Van Clarke in aid of Great Ormond Street, whose daughter Angelica was given a lifesaving operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital when she was just two days old.  Now 15 years old, Angelica has drawn a hare to help raise funds for the hospital that saved her life.  The hare has been reproduced on A4 canvases which have been sent to celebrities, inviting them to create an original artwork which will all be auctioned for charity both online and at an exclusive ‘Hare Ball’ at The Dorchester, Park Lane on 26th May 2011.

The majority of celebrity artworks will also be featured in a hard bound printed book designed by Karen Welman  to raise further money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The ultime aim of the appeal is by the hairdressing community is to raise £1 million for two new specialist neurosurgical operating theatres which will help treat 20 per cent more children requiring pioneering brain surgery.

Commenting on HARE Styling, Van Clarke says, “The pioneering work carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides hope to extremely sick children and their families. My family knows first-hand the incredible difference the hospital can make and I am always looking for ways to show my gratitude. When we first came up with this HARE styling idea, we weren’t sure how it would be received, but we have been overwhelmed by the response from the recipients of the canvases.”
This initiative is part of the wider HAIRraising appeal which has seen some of the biggest names in hairdressing, coming together in a bid to raise money for the hospital.  Hairdressing salons across the UK have been taking part in fundraising activities and have raised over £600,000 to date.
Says comedian, Catherine Tate, “HARE Styling is a fantastic innovative way to raise vital funds towards two new operating theatres at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I was really happy to get out the art box and lend my support.”

HARE Styling is at the Heartbreak Gallery, 17 Bulstrode Street, London, W1U 2JH.  Mondays to Saturdays: 10am – 6pm.  Sundays: 11am-4pm
