Lucy in Disguise launches Ready to Wear collection in Harvey Nichols

by Katie on June 2, 2011

Extending their repertoire to those who love the idea of vintage but don’t wish to buy pre-worn items (silly people), celebrity sisters, Lily and Sarah Allen’s shared passion for vintage and fashion is the start point for a ready-to-wear collection centred around the idea of style, capturing the verve and essence of each significant decade and adding a little 21st Century flair.

The 18-piece range for pre-fall features dresses including a black beaded tulle dress, a 40s-inspired crepe tea dress, and a high-waisted maxi dress.  Each look from the collection is named after a place or a time from a different decade and exudes a feeling of nostalgia that makes the collection as varied as it is retro:  Names such as Radio City, Fortnums, South Kensington, Altamont and Zanzibar have strong evocations of style.

Vintage inspired playful prints and block colours create a varied and punchy colour palette; From sequins to ruffles and sheer floaty chiffons and jerseys, mint greens and pale corals are complimented by bold turquoises and deep reds as well as bold prints.

The collection also explores different dress lengths – from whimsical maxi dresses ‘Altamont’ and ‘Claret’ to flirty mini styles such as ‘Goldrush’ and ‘Capone’; with in between ladylike, mid length dresses such as ‘Regatta’ and ‘Fortnums’ and 1970s inspired jumpsuits ‘The Roxy’ and ‘Zanzibar’.

The woman who shops for Lucy in Disguise likes to make an impact wherever she parties. She is spirited with verve and a sense of humour and chooses to dress up and experiment with her look.  Lily & Sarah have managed to capture as much style and distinctiveness as the gorgeous original vintage they sell in this fabulous first collection.

The Lucy in Disguise Ready-to-Wear collection will launch in various stores worldwide and in the UK exclusively at Harvey Nichols,, London from 6th June 2011.  The line will also be sold at the Lucy In Disguise, London store and online from June.

I’m not at all keen and not for purist reasons, I think the collection is rather dull. But as ever I enjoy your take on things..I’m going to post on this collection but link to you as perhaps the ‘reasoned’ assessment! x

Would rather have the real thing, and don’t care for repro anyway. Launching a label should be about being fresh, this is bandwagon jumping again with the clout of so called celebrity to support it. The models look like blow up dolls. All in all insulting to intelligence but I guess it’s not aimed at intelligent savvy people.

I honestly think that last comment says more about the poster and their view of the world than the LiD RTW range itself. I applaud the Allen girls for their business approach and the fact they are trying to widen their audience (not necessarily a ‘vintage’ crowd) to make their business work. They’re passionate about it, their true vintage collection is excellent and all they’re doing is taking their new RTW range to a new audience who may not have interfaced with the range. I prefer original vintage too, but hey, good luck to them. It works for other smaller ‘repro’ firms with not as good a handle on design.
