Issa Ramps up her Roots for S/S’12

by Katie on September 18, 2011

Issa designer, Daniella Helayel, promised to return to her roots and to Rio de Janeiro with a tropical collection brimming with colour and verve but would this mean that the designer so closely associated with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and her sister, Pippa Middleton would ditch the appeal of the simple wrap and drape jersey dress that made the brand even more commercial  through Royal patronage?  We are not thinking so.

This was a collection oozing with life, colour and print and a great kick in the pants for the end of Day 2 of London Fashion Week when heavy bursts of rain had dampened everyone’s mood a tad.  Front row sat Mohammed Al Fayed (as his daughter, Camilla, has a controlling of share in the brand) in place of some rising international ‘it’ girl  although we did have a couple of said beauties clinging to the arms of global gay man about town, Derek Blasberg, surely one of the nicest guys in fashion.

The Brazilian’s design ethos is to make ‘relaxed yet super-chic clothes that aim to uncomplicate modern life’ and Daniela hit the ball well and truly in the park with this ultimately commercial show.  Bam!, it had enough flawless and innocent white cotton shifts and lace detail dresses as well as zingy patterned two piece ensembles to mark these out as typical ‘D of C’ wear, even paired with brightly coloured fascinators to emphasise the ladylike point.  Pow!, the ‘return to roots’ nature meant that there were plentiful sexy samba inspired fringed dresses, silk print shifts, jumpsuits and languid, flowing kaftans ideal for types who holiday in Mauritius or The Hamptons and  Holy Moly!, there were low cut swimsuits and teen-weeny ‘Jardim Botanico’ tropical print bikinis for additional Brazilian vavavoom.

A finale of trademark Issa signature print shifts and a Brazilian Carnival showgirl who sambaed out with the designer joining in, added a fun jolt to this wet London Saturday and earned the first  sporadic round of applause at London Fashion Week.  Bravo Ms Helayel.
