Jeweller Katie Hillier collaborates with luxurious Loewe

Loewe’s luxury and subtle sophistication is what has always drawn me in. Never flash, just understated quality and distinction when some ‘other’ label reinventions are all bells and whistles and ‘it’ bags aplenty.

As a long time fan of the Spanish label, I’m more than impressed. Stuart Vevers has imposed his supreme taste level onto an already classic brand since joining as lead designer in 2007 and has taken it forward with panache without ever losing touch of its roots – that’s what makes him such a clever designer, that’s what makes him bankable.  His brand of strict sensuality and beautiful tonal colour combinations are making this House one to watch.  The fact that Loewe’s covetable accessories (for which they’re known for the world over) are an indulgent aside to the slickness of Vevers collections, neither detracting from the other, makes his design prowess even more remarkable.  And now, Vevers has involved his long-time friend and collaborator, Katie Hillier, one of Britain’s most original jewellery designers of distinction who has already designed for Luella, Stella McCartney, Salvatore Ferragamo and Marc by Marc Jacobs as well as Loewe.

Entering the Loewe store in London’s Mount Street to preview the collection, I could almost hear the supple soft napa leathers murmuring soft caresses.  The classic sits with the modern, neither looking out of kilter and Hillier’s Limited Edition Bag collection’s charm comes literally with ‘charm’ padlocks – a mouse, a snail or a rabbit depending on the bag colour.  Hillier is already looking forward to adding other animal charms to the Loewe roster and, seeing as it’s Chinese Year of the Dragon next year, we can guess which is next…

Taking a leaf out of Vevers book in terms of respect for the heritage and tradition of the brand, Hillier says, “‘I was really pleased to get the chance to work on a collaboration with Loewe,’ says Hillier. ‘But I was keen not to interfere with the design of any of the bags, because for me Loewe is all about heritage, and I absolutely respect that.” while Stuart Vevers responds, Collaborating with Hillier seemed an obvious and fun thing to do as I really like the playfulness of her (jewellery) creatures, and she was already a fan of the (Loewe) Amazona: in a newspaper interview she had listed it as her favourite bag, describing it as “a classic bag for cool girls.”

Together, Vevers and Hillier opted to make a subtle but significant difference to three of Loewe’s most popular bags, replacing the signature Loewe padlock with hardware based on Hillier’s animal designs. The result is a collection of three bags in refined calfskin – the classic Amazona, the Amazona 28 and the Ida 26 – in a choice of three colours.  The inside of each bag is leather lined, and carries a plaque that reads ‘limited edition’, embossed with the Loewe and Hillier logos and the shape of the animal.

Ultimately described tongue in cheek as ‘luxury as a wink’ the Hillier/Loewe collaboration adds playfulness and fun for urban fashionphiles while still appealing to Loewe’s core strengths.

The Hillier Loewe collection is available from Loewe stores and concessions globally from September 2011.
