Jasper Garvida’s Bold Geometry for S/S’12

by Katie on November 7, 2011

It’s taken Jasper Garvida a great deal of work to get to this point in his career. His graduate collection was lauded by Hilary Alexander, and bought up in its entirety by uber-stylist and Haus of Gaga henchman Nicola Formichetti, yet it as a stint on Sky 1’s ‘Project Catwalk’ show which really brought him to public consciousness.

Working for high street chains like Evans, Miss Selfridge, and Wallis has given the designer a strong commercial grounding, and this is where Garvida attuned his ability to design flattering clothes for women who aren’t strictly sample size. This sensibility has translated to his signature collections, which have been worn by a string of disparate female celebrities such as Elizabeth Hurley, Beverly Knight, and Sophie Dahl.
Garvida’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which takes Czech painter Frantisek Kupka’s abstract masterpiece ‘Autour d’un Point’ (Around a Point) as its launchpad, is a symphony of contrasts. Soft fabrics edged with strong metallic hardware, structured yet feminine tailoring, even the concise palette of black and white, which is paired with silver and gold to dazzling effect.
On the strength of all the shimmering embellishment it would be easy to write Garvida off with a simplistic tabloidese “King of Bling” headline, but the high points of this collection for me are the precision of the cutting, and the way the designer incorporates the bold geometry and colours of Kupka’s painting.

‘Project Runway’ judge Zandra Rhodes praised Garvida on his attention to detail, which is inherent throughout, from the soft caped shoulders of one cocktail dress, to the mirrored peplums, patch pockets, and subtle flashes of animal print.
Jasper Garvida’s collection is the mid-way point between David Koma’s edgy tribalism and Maria Grachvogel’s well-heeled West London refinement. Contrary? Maybe, but also a canny calculation from a focused designer looking to expand his customer base.
