Balenciaga Goes from Strength to Strength for A/W’12

by Katie on March 2, 2012

Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest collection for Balenciaga will divide his loyal following – or at least those yearning for the Gaga type shock factor.

Gone are the big pants with large shouldered jackets that were one of the defining looks of last season’s Paris Fashion Week, futuristic in the extreme and causing many to ‘ooh and ahhh’ but secretly to define the look as unwearable. Certainly the cash rich trend audience who are such ardent supporters of this label may have loved it, but again, giant pant shorts with huge shoulders and strongly architectured lines teamed with wimples may look fabulously avante garde and editorial but does it make the wearer look equally so?

Ghesquière has lightened up enormously but still has tons of steely edge and creative vision for Autumn/Winter ’12. There are still strong shoulders and ultra neo-modern pairings in both fabrication and proportion but Balenciaga girl has grown from a ‘look at me, I’m so dans le vent‘ strumpet to a pretty sophisticated she-wolf with sexy A-line skirts paired with boxy foil print metallic jackets, see through shifts with metallic breast plates worn under loose duster coats, flashes of fuchsia bright sculptured shirts or black polos worn against half see-through wrap skirts. These were every bit future vision while being feminine to the core, even if that femininity is wrapped in Starship Trooper sultriness.
Large pockets were made a feature on a gorgeous metallic print wrap coat with rust lining and A line skirts worn with sci-fi sweatshirts looked quite simply ultra modern but ultra on trend.  Trousers looked like track pants worn by the Star Ship Enterprise (in a good way) while gathered, metallic high-waisted pants were worn with severe boxy shoulder wrap jackets tucked firmly inside.

This was a confident and courageous show by a designer going from strength to strength at a label that the fash pack reveres with good reason. Nicolas Ghesquière’s vision is unlike no other. Bravery and direction in leaps and bounds.
