Collecting is a Wonderful Illness – A Conversation with Daphne Guinness

by Katie on May 7, 2012

How odd indeed. I call it synchronicity. I stumbled upon my idol, Daphne Guinness, renowned for her idiosyncratic style and fashion and art collections at the Christian Louboutin private after party at The Ivy last Monday.

Feeling somewhat shy and enamoured (but tipsy) I plucked up the courage to speak to the lady who first commented on my vintage YSL necklace and then we got into a conversation about collecting. I asked her how she choose to let go of some of her collections and she said with great difficulty but she held on to significant life pieces. I admitted that as one of Galliano’s fledgling PRs from aeons ago, I sold most of my collection via Sothebys. “Aah,…,” she commented wisely, “…but you didn’t let go of all it I’ll bet.” I admitted I hadn’t and had kept a selection spanning around 3 seasons. And so it is the way of obsession. And of collecting. Letting go is the hard part and you always chase what you have yet to acquire.

Cut to less than a week later and LVMH’s visionary online magazine, Nowness.com, are featuring Ms Guinness is a frank two part conversation about collecting with Simon de Pury, Chairman and Chief Auctioneer of renowned auction house Phillips de Pury & Company, who is oft referred to as “the Mick Jagger of the auction world,” due to his lively auctioning style. See part one below and head to Nowness who will be showing the second part of the conversation, photographed by Johnnie Shand Kydd, tomorrow from 12.01am EST.
