Chutzpah’s Weekly Barometer

by Katie on August 5, 2012

A light hearted look back over the past week’s good, bad and indifferent including the “don’t even go there’s.”

LOVING
The women of Team GB – Not wanting to underplay our male athletes’ achievements BUT these ladies are the real role model deal. Why get a breast enhancement and marry a footballer when you can be crowned the greatest all-round female athlete in the world, like Jessica Ennis?

Aqua Universalis Shower & Body Creams (£35 & £45) – Monsieur Francis Kurkdjian’s on another winner by adding these to his already superb stable of products. Big wafts of fresh Sicilian lemon and Calabrian bergamot meet sweet mock orange and lily of the valley in one of Kurkdjian’s iconic fragrances. There’s no brighter way to start the day. Available exclusively exclusively from Selfridges and Liberty.

Lane Crawford – Luxury Hong Kong retailer currently making a push into Europe. Harvey Nicks and Selfridges had better watch their backs…..

Mr. Hare – Contemporary footwear designer Marc Hare, who counts Jude Law and Robert Downey Jnr among his celebrity fans, opens his first standalone store in London’s West End this September.

‘Valentino: Master of Couture’ – Exhaustive retrospective of iconic designer Valentino Garavani’s career dressing first ladies, global superstars, and Oscar-winning actresses. Running from 29th September 2012-3rd March 2013 at London’s Somerset House, the exhibition programme includes screenings, talks, and other accompanying events. NOT TO BE MISSED.

Greeen Linez – Team Chutzpah’s latest discovery is British/Japanese duo Greeen Linez, whose new album ‘Things That Fade’ echoes forgotten Eighties soul classics

Dolce&Gabbana Passion Duo Summer Pleasures collection – The bold hues of this new cosmetics collection from Dolce&Gabbana just scream lush and tropical for eyes & nails. All we need now is an Indian Summer to wear them in. Dolce&Gabbana Passion Duo Summer Pleasure Gloss Fusion Lipsticks come in Exotic, Fatal, Feminine, Imperial, Natural, Royal, Sensual,Tropical, Intrigue and Vivid (all £25). Nail Lacquers (£18) come in Cosmopolitan, Fire, Grey Pearl, Passione and Royal (all £18).

The Hatwalk – The Capital’s most famous historic statues have been kitted out in new titfers by some of London’s leading milliners. V cute. Try and catch them all now before they all (inevitably) get stolen.

Gap’s slim cropped refined print pant – A little bit Prada but for a fraction of the price.

‘About Face: Supermodels Then and Now’ – Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ recently aired HBO documentary examines the lives of some of the most celebrated models of the 20thCentury, and the role they played in defining modern beauty.

London Collections: Men – Back, BACK, BACK!!! for another season, and cocking a snook at the Italians by scheduling up against Pitti Uomo.

Gennarino the Bear by Moschino – Misery Bear has a rival. From September, Moschino introduces a new friend to cover our iPhones. With a Mediterranean background and a typical Italian name, “Gennarino, the bear by Moschino”, he is available in brown with a red bow, yellow with blue bow, and pink with green bow

HATING

Current state of Italian fashion – When Miuccia Prada starts complaining about the current malaise in Milan, and foreign investment in high-end houses, you know that something’s up.

‘ARTPOP’ – Hopefully the last record we’ll hear from Lady Gaga. We literally cannot contain our ennui over at Chutzpah Mansions.

Scrunchies – Not having a revival on our watch.

Peeing in the pool – Ryan Lochte may have during his practice session, but that doesn’t mean we love him any less (CALL US RYAN!).

Justin Bieber – Hitting the headlines for his comments on the heir-to-the-throne’s riah. If the miming Canadian pop urchin had made similar comments about William’s missus there’d be outrage at Vogue House.

The ‘Trainspotting’ TV series – The original was a bona fide British cinema moment, but that moment has long since passed. Let’s hope that Irvine Welsh’s idea to resuscitate Renton, Spud et al in a television series with the original film cast also passes.

Liam Gallagher – Head of bottom-feeding terrace casual label Pretty Green writes off 90% of the British fashion industry as “idiots” in a recent interview. It may be churlish of us to suggest that those 90% are still more talented than the past-it Beatles tribute band lead whiner, but we’ll do it anyway.

Pussy Riot – We applaud Russian feminists’ right to protest, but do they have to do it dressed like two seasons-old Kokon To Zai?

Those McQueen visors – Warning…warning…fashion week cliché incoming…..

Jedward and Tara Reid – We can’t even imagine what it’s like to be in Tara Reid’s world, tripping through life with only a bad boob job and a bit-part in the lamest comedy film series of the last fifteen years to keep her from losing touch with reality completely. Hanging out with migraine-inducing mentalist twins Jedward mustn’t be helping matters much either.

SUBTLE AND SUBLIMINAL ‘NOT-REALLY-OLYMPICS-THEMED’ FRAGRANCE OF THE WEEK

Ben Sherman Gold – This juice is housed in a flashy gold bottle modelled on the Union flag YET everyone forgot to mention “Team GB”, “Olympics”, or “London 2012” in the press release. Funny that.
