Roja Dove releases Fetish. The Dominatrix Chypre

by Katie on December 17, 2012

Roja Dove, the man whose personality and charisma is as memorable as his works, is truly a master perfumer. This man manages to encapsulate a bygone era in his perfume formulation but make that era truly relevant and as astounding as it was the first time around. Don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t try to replicate works of old. No, no…just the feeling, the texture, the feel of the bygone (banned) ingredients and the lushness of good classic perfume yet make that resolutely modern.

His work includes such greats as the heady leathery, astoundingly expensive and lauded chypre, Dhiagilev as well as Scandal, Danger, Mischief, Amber Aoud and the lately released tease of a chypre, Risque. He love chypres almost as much as he loves his enigmatically charged names for his creations and for that I’m extremely grateful. As I say, I like my perfume like I like my men, big and bold or difficult to comprehend. A mix of the two is preferable.

On that very point, Mr Dove has gone beyond his remit and has, to my mind, released the finest chypre of this year, if not of some time. Fetish may have an ‘oh la la’ quality to its name, but like the best dominatrix, she’s as sophisticated as she is focused and unremitting. This powerful lady knows how to keep her suitors in check. And she is a lady. Saying that, this is one bitch of a perfume. That’s a compliment by the way. This is a woman who’s subtle enough to slink into a room but leave an indelible aura, dripping in confidence and caustic comments. Complex, intelligent, deep, soulful and defiantly sexy with an edge, Fetish likes to challenge conventions.
Fetish was launched in the environs of The Savoy’s beautiful, deco, Beaufort Piano Bar with Nina Simone’s ‘I put a spell on you’ playing on repeat in the background. That set up the louche mood. Then there was the over arching smell of sheer sexy luxe on entering. We were in no doubt that Fetish had us under her compulsive spell.

The first spray is a wake up call to arms. The first bitter rush of sharp Bergamot and Petigrain is like endorphins charging through the veins, closely followed by a swamp of rose, jasmine, giant tuberose and ylang ylang. But it is the base notes that make this perfume the real deal. A sharp galbanum note is added to the velvety, deeply sensual, oakmoss, patchouli, cedarwood, vetiver, clove, cinnamon and cedar needles and then BAM! The rich smoky, leathery castoreum and heavy musk is there to lull you into seduction. This is a big perfume for big personalities or for unleashing the latent devil within those decidedly quieter souls.
Fetish is a master stroke of incredible vision. Like bottling up the whole of Fortnum & Mason and mixing it with a Mayfair dominatrix dressed in Roland Mouret. Fetish is quite simply, Sherlock’s Irene Adler bottled. And what could be better than that? A proper Scandal in Bohemia indeed.

Fetish is priced £195 (100ml Eau de Parfum) and £295 (50ml Parfum) and is available from Roja Parfums, Harrods (Tel: 0207 893 8797) and www.rojadove.com
