Les Exlusifs de Chanel launches a new baby: 1932

by Katie on February 27, 2013

Les Exclusifs de Chanel has a new baby for us to coo over.

Not re-worked nor re-issued, this  glorious little princess is wholly devised by Monsieur Jacques Polge, Chanel’s house perfumer, to commemorate the year when Chanel’s fine ‘joaillerie’ collection ‘Bijoux de Diamants’ was first issued. The baroque brilliance of the clunking double C’s of Chanel, the mix of gold and pearl and the signature camelia have since been forever captured alongside their Chanel diamond haute jewellery counterparts (since 1932) and what fitting way to remember this than to create a perfume inspired by and devoted to its memory.
In every way 1932 is typically Chanel and moreso, an Exclusif. The huge Chanel branded minimalist bottle with the white label, the snap of the magnetic double-C embossed lid, the pale yellowy green tinge of the contents and the quiet elegance of the whole adehydic package. But in other ways, 1932 lifts Chanel beyond expectations.
The year that saw Aldous Huxley’s dystopian version of a ‘Brave New World’ released, with Chanel instead gives us beauty, hope, grace and aplomb. This perfume is simply and prettily divine. Some may say pleasant, but that’s too weak and watery whereas 1932’s initial rush of aldehydes and a warmer neroli leads to a soft and certain heart of a good jasmine, sappy sharp yet ever engaging carnation, rose, blooming lilac and ylang-ylang to the distinctive swoop of iris and violet with their purple tinged, soil fresh, woody earthy tones. But the latter would belie 1932’s beauty and sweetness. This is a silk chiffon clad and powder puffed princess in kid ballet slippers that’s translated as vetiver, oris, amber, sandalwood, ambrette and musk. So pretty and engaging that one longs for light-filled early Spring days to wear it to its full extent. Hope and optimism abounds in this new release.
Jacques Polge says of his latest creation, “1932 evokes a dazzling array of diamond stars and comets. Created petal by petal, the soft, woody fragrance expresses an enveloping heart of White Jasmine.”

1932 sneaks up on the wearer and places its hands quietly upon their eyes and whispers, guess who? From the moment of first spray, you’re intrigued. Intrigued to find out what really makes up this enigma who is so quiet yet overflowing with personality. A few sprays more and the aura of 1932 surrounds you. Not big and bold and statement like but refined and gracious. Yes, 1932 is grace personified…like Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s ‘Rear Window’.
1932 will draw legions of admirers from the existing fan base of No 5 and Cristalle but I’d be more interested to meet the converts. This is an ideal choice for those who may not have ventured close to the Chanel house perfumes previously as it isn’t ‘knock you over the head Chanel’ (whose well known house fragrances may be worn by legions of women) but ‘discreet Chanel‘ that says class, femininity and hauteur but never froidour.

I can imagine 1932 being roundly adored by men who catch a nasal nuance on the air surrounding their intended. They may, however, need pointing in the right direction to find this rarity. Like good women, good grounded pretty perfumes are hard to find. 1932 is one such find.

1932 is available exclusively in the Chanel Covent Garden Pop-Up Store, Chanel Boutiques, House of Fraser Glasgow, Fenwicks Newcastle, Selfridges Manchester Exchange and Selfridges W1 from 1st March 2013 priced £110 (75ml) and £205 (200ml).
