Montblanc releases Legend Pour Femme

by Katie on March 10, 2013

Say Montblanc and you won’t be forgiven for thinking expensive pens and not perfume. But, Montblanc have just released ‘Legend Pour Femme’, another foray into women’s perfume since their initial release of ‘Legend’ (for men) in May 2011. I suspect these launches are more to capitalise on a heritage name and eek out sales from travellers at airports and the like rather than driven to create a stupendous stand-out fragrance.

Still, it’s pleasant and expensive smelling enough, to be enjoyed mostly by cool blonde types (as featured in the ad, photographed by Peter Lindbergh, no less) who like to smell safely expensive rather than distinctive and different. And, if that is what you’re looking for it works.

The prose tells me it all about “quiet self-confidence, her choices, her simplicity,” but forgive me for saying that this smells much like any other safe, big-brand fragrance. Pleasant, unassuming, fresh and rather indistinct. As I say, like the whiff of a too-light, too-bright airport duty-free area where nomad travellers lurk, ponder and spray to while away the confined time.
Sure, the bottle is a signifier of Montblanc’s finery with its heavy glass riveted rings and six-pointed star insignia, but this is a narrow sell in terms of appeal to a female audience steeped in designer recognition and with understanding of ‘what buying this will say about me’.

The juice itself is light and sparkling, almost spring like from the glacial ice of Montblanc itself dappled with brights like neroli, crunchy pear and bitter orange with an undercurrent of jasmine and lily. Then, as expected, a softness kicks in to bring it down a tone – all vanilla, blonde woods and light powdery, dusky resin.

Bernard Ellena and Nathalie Feisthauer have poured resolute Montblanc’ism into this fragrance. Whether the Montblanc woman exists or is merely a figment of brand imagination remains to be seen in terms of sales and appeal.

Montblanc Legend Pour Femme is available exclusively from The Perfume Shop from 28th March and nationwide from the 29th April 2013. Available in 30ml, 50ml and 75ml Eau de Parfum.
