Topman Lux Collection – The Duke Spirit
Remember those starkly-lit photos of David Bowie’s Thin White Duke phase? Slicked-back hair and monochrome evening dress, cigarette hanging nonchalantly from an equally dispassionate scowl?
Well the Thin White Duke is now reborn in Topman’s new Lux collection, a range of sleek evening wear, knits, outerwear, and accessories which shares The Duke’s lithe, aristocratic aesthetic.
David Bowie has been as influential to the fashion world as the recording industry. Recent seasons have seen both Dolce & Gabbana and Dries Van Noten channelling Bowie collaborator Anthony Price and his Berlin period respectively.
With the ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert museum, and a new number one album, Bowie continues to inspire a new generation of artists and designers. It’s not difficult to recognise his influence in the slim navy tailoring of the Topman Lux collection, or the popped-collar of an immaculate stone trench.
Nothing shouts rock and roll louder than black leather, and the Lux collection offers both a black leather bomber and biker jacket, as well as “intrecciato”-style woven leather hi-top trainers and a document holder.
Topman’s use of refined dobby-woven fabrics, soft leather, and mohair wools sets this range apart from other “luxury” high street options. In fact, it’s safe to say that Topman has set the bar high yet again. Prices start at £25, rising to up to £300 for a three-piece suit.
