Versace’s Pre-Fall’14 is everything you’d expect it to be. A jolt of sassy OTT colour, leather, lycra and studs with Medusa head buttons popping their faces all over the place.
What I didn’t expect was the juxtaposition with retro vision (studded classic leather pants, flippy skirts and silver cowboy tipped collars on shirts say pure Gianni circa early ‘90s) meets the dropped shoulder insouciance of today’s hipster Versace crew. All beanie hats, over-the-knee boots and bored sneers. But I shouldn’t be surprised as the whole feel is perfectly in keeping with the current Versace story. Canadian born actor, Nolan Funk (from Glee) will please the legions of Versace girl and gay addicts alike as much as Lady Gaga does in the latest round of ads, looking distinctly like Donatella.
What Versace proves is that the brand is adept at transforming itself and making itself highly relevant to new fans whether film stars or fawning acolytes who’ll actually (economically) only dip in and buy the fragrance. Donatella has her finger on the pulse. Don’t ever doubt it.
