Amanda Wakeley’s Kinky Mayfair Geisha for A/W’14

AMANDA WAKELEY AW14 - LOOK 18

Hell didn’t quite freeze over for London Fashion Week A/W’14 but it was surely the next best/worst thing. Standing outside the slick new Amanda Wakeley store in Albermarle street in the sleeting, icy cold, February rain and gale force winds, while wondering why we weren’t been allowed in (as the celebs mingled and chatted in bare-sleeved dresses, of course), a few of us did wonder why we constantly went through this charade. A fan of the brand and of Ms Wakeley’s return to prominence in the echelons of London’s refined design society, my spirit was somewhat dampened and ebbed by the wait in blustery conditions. I did think,  ‘this better be good’.  Thankfully, Amanda aimed to please in a show that had oodles of Wakeley’s long, smooth, linear lines in sumptuous fabrics but also, and here’s the rub, managed to knock in that thing fash eds always look for, trend, as well as please her stalwart, glamour-puss, celebrity doyennes.

The brief show notes stated ‘the Amanda Wakeley woman has spent  the early weeks of Winter in Japan, exploring the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto’. It was in reference to the  the bad-ass confidence of the Wakeley woman and a collection that spilled forth Japanese geisha touches (ie. cue, trend) and references such as leather Obi belts cinched over bustiers, the swooping trail of structured Kimono tinged overcoats (a la minimalist Celine variety), textured silk kimono jacket wraps over hard-edged London leather biker pants, and long, long narrow skirts (with sexy high zip back detailing) that allowed the models to shuffle in small steps, Geisha-like. However, make no mistake, this was no meek little woman. This was typical Wakeley glamour and elegance with spike heels and leather (& suede) kicks. I’d wager that Amanda’s clientele are less Geisha and more gutsy – though some may undoubtedly be kept women who aim to please. Lucky bitches.

What this collection showed was that Wakeley is back in the right end of London town and gearing for global appeal. Eschewing the oh-so-over ‘Made in Chelsea’ Sloanes for an altogether more edgy, kinky, Mayfair mistress who is as much at home in the Upper East side as Westminster. Nice work if you can get it.
