What’s more beautiful? The unique scents or the packaging? It’s a toss up. Fornasetti is surely the chicest of the ‘profumi per la casa’. From the enigmatic wide eyed, often winking faces of Italianite beauties to the classical architecture, trompe l’oeils, owls (which signify good fortune in Italy), soleil and flora, Fornasettis’ magical dream world is saturated in rich imagery and filled with whimsical humour. Identifiable and idiosyncratic.
Adding to his father’s heritage works and vision, Barnaba Fornasetti has show skill in the reinterpretation of his father’s original designs. Enter the newest launch in Fornasetti’s illustrious range: Giardino Segreto, or Secret Garden.
Conjuring scenes for me of Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s childhood classic of friendship and regeneration, Fornasetti’s Giardino Segreto is every bit as mysterious as Burnett’s hidden garden retreat encircled by stone walls. Giardino Segreto also plays to the beauty of the classic Italian Renaissance garden. Peace and serenity and a means to relaxation. And so with the scent for this Fornasetti offer – crisp bergamot and cypress give way to a more rich fugue of herbs and vetiver. Fornasetti’s scents are as rich and complex as the designs which encapsulate them and grow stronger with each burn.
Available as either a candle or room spray the fragrance comes housed in a range of containers featuring a unique design new to the Fornasetti collection. Created by combining three existing designs in the company’s catalogue the new offering makes a striking ‘bringing the outside inside’ addition to any room. Verdant green foliage hide the eyes of inquisitive owls that peer out between columns or leaves.
Flora di Fornasetti (an existing favourite) adds to the flora/fauna theme. Hydrangeas in startling pinks and blues are dotted on the candle vessels while the heavy dopamine like lily of the valley power hit moves into a gentler jasmine, orange blossom and sandalwood scent. Pure hedonism.
Giardino Segreto is currently available at Selfridges in a range of containers starting at £85. There’s even the most sublime room spray contained within a Fornasetti casing.
