I first came across Creatures of the Wind from the work they did with Swarovski as one of their nominated designers using Swarovski crystallised during NYFW. It seemed like an odd pairing yet somehow it worked with their particular brand of kooky New York out there hipness.
Fast forward a couple of years and my, how Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters have grown. Yup, the offbeat touches like knotted draping, sharp lapels and contemporary, finished-unfinished slights are still there but this is a plenty assured collection that could sit side by side some of the more grown-up stalwarts in Neiman Marcus as well as Barneys.
These days, a kick of sexiness is well worth the effort for those offspring of stars and hedge-funders alike who like to live dangerously. Well, not quite that dangerously.
Lots of ‘60s Emma Peel references sat cheek-by-jowl frilly, hippie type contrast and juxtaposed sleeving in a Joni Mitchell meets The Avengers mash-up.
Particularly hot were the knotted details on shirts and skirts. As were the silver foil print chiffon separates. Lots of fur throws, floppy hats and wild floral prints added to the Boho West Village ambience without running too amuck.
Throughout, there was a knowing sophisticated edge that’s been lacking in their previous offerings. I wouldn’t be too surprised to see this duo suddenly rocket.
