Yesterday as sun hit Glasgow (what tha!), I was invited down to the Grey Goose termed ‘World’s Smallest Cocktail Bar’. Part of a Grey Goose and Harvey Nichols paired initiative to highlight the Summer martini. This bar on wheels is a gorgeous little French Boulangerie camionnette that hosts a smart and clued up mixologist that’s worthy of a teeny plush hotel. Inside the wonders of Grey Goose vodka await with martinis being mixed according to the client’s likes and dislikes so a very personal ‘tini is created for each guest. Perfect.
My friend and I were quizzed on our food likes & dislikes by our mixologist, Roberto, who mixed up two excellent martinis with the exact amount of piquancy and balance in each. My friend opted for a slightly sweeter version – the ying to my yang. Roberto mixed 50ml La Poivre Grey Goose with 15ml of St Germain liqueur (one of my favourites when mixed with Grey Goose and topped with champagne, known as a ‘twinkle’) and 5ml of rhubarb liqueur, set off with a lemon twist. Smooth, just sweet enough but still with sharpness contrary to most of the over-cloying sweetness served in bars masquerading as flavoured martinis.
My cocktail was a sharp, clean affair that tasted of alcoholic mountain dew with an edge of the exotic. It was a clean 50ml Grey Goose citron with cardamom seed, again set off with a lemon twist. Fitting as Grey Goose is made from spring water naturally filtered through limestone from the Cognac region.
As a promotional tool and initiation (for many) into the art of not only good but great cocktails, the Grey Goose Boulangerie Francois Camionnette is inspired. On tour in Edinburgh and Manchester, one to one consultations are booked via www.greygoose.com. The camionnette will be stationed in Multrees Walk, Edinburgh from 11th-18th June and outside Harvey Nichols, Manchester from 31st July-6th August.
Or, if you fancy a larger taste of Grey Goose Boulangerie Francois, head to the terrace which will pop-up in Harvey Nichols’ Edinburgh Fifth Floor form 11th Jun-6th September where Summer cocktails will be served with a food pairing menu. Or, book in for a martini masterclass to perfect your mixologist skills. (Priced £35 per session and bookable via harveynichols.com)
