One of Guerlain’s best releases of late has been its gentleman’s L’Homme Ideal. A woody aromatic that’s so charming and pleasant to be around, with it’s balanced approach and suave sexiness it’s the epitome of a male escort in fragrance format. Based on the premise that the ‘L’Homme Ideal’ (the ideal man) does not exist…a tad like searching for the Holy Grail, Guerlain’s perfumer, Thierry Wasser, went to the bother of creating a fragrance to beguile us ladies. It worked.
And now we have it’s younger brother champing at our heels and for our hearts. The younger, lighter, more frivolous and flirtatious L’Homme Ideal Cologne, released in time for Summer evenings and a lighter mood. The press release speaks of ‘the ideal husband’ as its inspiration. Now, hold on a minute there….Who said anything about commitment without the spangly 2 karat Mappin & Webb emerald cut on my finger? Priorities, please.
L’Homme Ideal cologne is a burst of energetic grapefruit and orange with a bittersweet sparkle of pink peppercorn, bergamot and herby fresh Campari. Its fresh neroli heart widens with the bergamot as a constant beat in the background. The release speaks of sweet (sugared) almonds but its the soft facet of white musk and moss like vetiver that are apparent.
Though lightweight, L’Homme Ideal has some depth. Not the brooding, intellectual, enigmatic depth of our yearnings maybe. But certainly a pleasant enough date at a better restaurant.
L’Homme Ideal Cologne is newly available on Guerlain counters in dept stores priced £48 (50ml) and £63 (100ml)
