Whether you’re an A grade fan or a critic, Michael Kors, with his plethora of affordable designer handbags (the clever man took over mid-market designerism), rose gold, large-face watches and numerous perfumes, is a hard brand to ignore. In fact, his accessories, perfumes and cosmetic lines are a tad more well known (dare I say) that his seasonal Michael Kors collections (seen here, Resort 2016). Which is a shame. As Michael Kors consistently produces very uptown Urbanite, very New York clean cut, clean line collections at odds with his ‘rose gold’ glitzy fame.
The money spinners are his ever evolving perfume range that appeals to the girl on the street with a penchant for affordable designer booty. Big, bold and over blowing, sheeny florals is Mr Kors’ thing, all served up in cubist proportions appealing equally to the Manhattanite as to the Mancunian. These are fragrances to be pulled from a handbag in a nightclub ladies’ room. To spray on liberally. To drown the wearer in shimmering femininity. And with this, Michael Kors has just released the next chapter of the Michael Kors Collection fragrances: The Gold Collection. Each of the three individual scents is designed to reflect the opulence and luxury of the highly prized metal—from white, to rose, to 24K gold.
Why gold? Because it embodies the ‘totes’ luxe glamour of the typical Michael Kors woman and has become a symbol of Michael’s Korsian world —from lustrous fabrics and sun-kissed skin to high-shine hardware and gilded jewellery.
“There is nothing sexier than a woman with a beautiful glow after an amazing vacation—and nothing complements that glow better than shimmering gold jewellery and a hint of fragrance that feels just as opulent and glamorous, “ says Michael Kors.
There’s three new releases, carefully chosen and constructed with the Michael Kors woman in mind, offering a scent for her every occasion, mood and personal aesthetic.
I’ve tried White Luminous Gold which is a sparkling , sweet burst of juicy wet pear with a burst of full blown jasmine and a soft slur of amber at the base. It surprised me as it’s soft sweet and a grower. Yes, it’s big and unabashedly feminine and in your face but with a charming facet. Not too young either, White Luminous Gold lingers like girls at a glamorous cocktail bar unwilling to prize themselves away from the action.
Rose Radiant Gold is another beast and reminds of Michael Kors original ‘Very Michael Kors’. It’s heavier and pleasantly cloyingly sweet and blousy with its hypnotic sparkling spice, fragrant rich florals and soft white musks. 24k Brilliant Gold is the voluptuous bold one of the trio, orange, woody and again, with enormous florals.
The advertising campaign is reassuringly photographed by the great Mario Testino (which is fitting to Michael Kors’ essence of glamour) and features a bronzed Karmen Pedaru, Michael Kors’ muse, wearing a glamorous array of mixed metallic accessories that radiates the Michael Kors luxe gold lifestyle. In this case, all that glistens is Gold.
