Yes, I know we’re about to hit December and this overtly pink, rose fuelled hysteria isn’t the first choice when we’re in heavy winter fragrances but, hear me out and stay with me.
This beauty appears to have got lost in my banal daily tasks of life and re-discovering it was pure joy. Was it ever that beautifully light, fragrant, rosy and heat-filled during Summer? Well, again, no, as I’m in the North where it’s akin to Game of Thrones North of the Wall weather much of the time. But you get the picture?
L’Artisan Parfumeur have a whole host of exquisite fragrances that the initiated or the enlightened seek out. Rose Privee was devised by master perfumer, Bertrand Duchaufour who has created the entire Mon Numero collection for L’Artisan as well as Frapin 1697 and Comme des Garcons, Series 3, Incense; Kyoto, amongst many others. What Monsieur Duchaufour brings to the party is not only skill but extremely refined taste, quality and balance. Duchaufour pushes the boundaries within classicism and the results are always unique. Working with apprentice, Stéphanie Bakouche, Duchaufour has managed to encapsulate the perfect high Summer day in Grasse, swimming in the cent of Rosa Centifolia.
Rose Privee isn’t frothy but sparkles when it hits skin….like being spilled a little with Laurent Perrier Pink. It’s ever-so-slightly sweet and mandarin juicy with teeny bursts of red fruit like a strawberry has been popped into that champagne glass. Underneath the effervescence there’s a pretty much old Skool style classic perfume made slightly less proper with hooks of patchouli and amber.
There’s a mix of dried hay and heat in there as well as a whole heap of magnolia, violet leaf and carnation. The feel is of young buds plucked and restrained with a greenish tinge whilst the background pulses with quiet sensuality. This is a pretty fragrance for pretty grown up girls who like to flirt with classic mores. Not sexy at all but beyond feminine, Rose Privee is like discovering a feel-good day in a bottle.
L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Rose Privee is priced £77 (50ml) and £97 (100ml) and available online.
