Quelle Surprise – Rupert Sanderson shoes divas

by Katie on May 8, 2010

One of my favourite shoe designers, Rupert Sanderson, has gone even more highbrow by designing for the latest production of Verdi’s Aida, currently showing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

Beautifully sculptured Romanesque sandals could be straight from an over-the-top Paris runway show and and highlight that only true divas wear Rupert Sanderson.

Against the ragged aesthetic of David McVicar’s critically acclaimed production, the bejeweled slippers and platform wedge sandals designed for the princess, stand out like jewels. Created to appear as if Amneris is being held up by two Atlas characters, the Princess’ gold sandals are quite a feat of design and deign her to heavenly throes.

I even love the distressed boots that Sanderson has created for the production, buried in his back garden for two months for added authenticity. Distressed boots are de rigeur for next season’s London feet. Even high street chain, Bertie are doing them.

Rupert Sanderson said of the collaboration with Royal Opera,“The opportunity to delve into The Royal Opera’s costume archives and explore the Opera House itself has been immensely inspiring.”

Let’s see if we all float on gilded wings in a future Sanderson collection.
