Vogue’s Fashion Night Out and the Launch of Manolo Blahnik for Liberty

by Katie on September 7, 2010

Hang on to your harem pants. It’s one of the Fashion World’s most exciting days of the year (8th September 2010) as it’s Vogue’s Fashion Night Out – A Global Celebration of Fashion.

All over this fair city, there are fashion events, designer appearances, launches and general swinging happenings occuring.  Now all I need to figure out is the outfit to take me from ‘Selfishes’ (Lily Allen’s Lucie In Disguise launch), The Maison Vuitton party in New Bond Street, the Moschino cocktails happening, the Nicole Farhi drinks, The Harvey Nichols numerous fashion appearances and events and…the launch of Manolo Blahnik for Liberty, a shop in shop with a limited edition collection of specially designed shoes, unique items and prints available exclusively at Liberty, the store of the niche fashionista.  The perfect pairing.

Manolo’s a legend. Who can resist the coloured satin, the bows, the elevation, the pointed, sleek sexiness, the sheer craftmanship and ladylike elegance of all things Manolo?  The lines and silhouettes of his distinctive designs remain instantly recognisable as unique, inimitable exercises in precision and balance, exquisite workmanship and luxury.  The store in Old Church Street, Chelsea is a mecca for shoe types (like me) especially come sale time.  Shoe designers may come and go but not many have hung out with Grace Coddington and Paloma Picasso.  Manolo’s chic to the nth and a true original.

So, the launch of ‘Shoe Heaven’  or ‘The World of Manolo’ at Fashion’s Night Out where Manolo Blahnik, the shoe maestro himself and Yasmin Le Bon, his muse and close friend will arrive at Liberty at 6.30 pm to open the special room Manolo is bound to be hub of activity.  The ground floor emporium will house his collection of to-die-for shoes and covetable items including candles, cushions, umbrellas, stationery and bow ties he has designed exclusively for Liberty.  Manolo will be at Liberty till 8 pm to meet customers and sign shoes and the items from his limited edition Liberty collection.

A special collection of Manolo’s world-renowned shoe designs will be available in Liberty, the first time they have ever been sold outside of his flagship store in the UK. There are exclusive shoes in Liberty fabrics from the 60’s Manolo selected from the archives reflecting his current love of geometric prints as well as the highlights of the A/W10 collection.

Coinciding with Manolo at Liberty is the launch of a beautiful collection of  colourful images reeking of love, life, colour, elegance and sleekly arched sex, all in shoe format – Manolos New Shoes.  The dizzying designs streak across the pages and whirl you into temptation just as Manolo’s real life versions do.  These are shoes as graphic art.  The book is organised thematically to express Manolo’s passions and interests and features highlights such as his renowned designs for Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette as well as contributions from fashion’s cognoscenti including Suzy Menkes and Grace Coddington.  A coffee table book for even the non shoe obsessed.  Though show me a ‘non fixated on shoes’ woman and I’ll show you my pet unicorn.  Deal?

‘Manolos New Shoes (published by Thames & Hudson; £24.95) is released on the 13th,  Liberty has an exclusive book-signing event scheduled in the ‘World of Manolo’ on 21st October.

Do you own Manolos?  Are you shoe obsessed?  Please feel free to leave a comment in the box below or start a conversation in the shout mix’ box opposite.  Thank you.
