Jo Malone releases Velvet Rose & Oud to Cologne Intense range

by Katie on May 21, 2012

My first reaction to the arrival of Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose & Oud was “What? What is this?” (in a good way) and “By Jo Malone? Really?” in a more delightfully shocked but incredulous manner.

I should point out that I like Jo Malone. A brand (now owned by Estee Lauder Companies) that has carved out a very British name for itself around the globe as the archetype of British natural scents and pairings. Fragrances such as Lime, Mandarin & Basil, Red Roses, English Pear & Freesia and Wild Fig & Cassis are their countenance and their fresh approach to fragrance combining to achieve a more unique personal story as well as their unparallelled staff service and knowledge all makes this a jolly good brand that we’d like to think we can put in a box and say, tick, VG, we know what they represent.
Which is why, when a gorgeous interloper like Velvet Rose & Oud appears, it makes a perfumista question her sanity (or at least where the hell she’s been and how has she possibly missed the Jo Malone Cologne Intense range) and shakes her visions of a brand that she thought she’d boxed quite nicely, now viewing them as a secretly sexy lothario, who reveals their true colours just when she thought they were the ‘nice safe boy who could be  introduced to the parents.’

Velvet Rose & Oud is unquestionably beautiful. A big, round, sensual delight of a cologne intense that rubs you up the right way and seduces your senses in one fell swoop. A deluge of woodiness wraps around the darkest, richest, Damask rose that’s as creamy as swoops of pink rose ice cream paired with the finest Prestat dark chocolate rose creams, but wrapped in layers of Autumnal woody foliage with a clove & cinnamon smack. The Oud is a soft Oud. A gentle warming, ‘you’ll love me, I won’t scare you’ Oud – one to be sought out by those with a longing for the exotic with charm and sensibility – like Chelsea Flower Show in a humid climate with hot dusky breezes blowing gasps of Damask rose through a haze of hotness.

As with their other fragrances, Jo Malone suggest that this beauty can be combined with other perfumes in the Cologne Intense range like Dark Amber & Ginger or Oud & Bergamot, to bring out other facets of the fragrance, but I like this fine, just as it is. I suggest that you, too, may seek to discover its appeal.

Velvet Rose & Oud is available from Jo Malone from June 2012 priced at £95 for 100ml.
