Chanel’s Superstition Autumn Collection 2013

by Katie on August 5, 2013

COLLECTION SUPERSTITION_Ad Visual_ww_01“Very Superstitious. Writing’s on the wall…” sings Stevie Wonder. He could have summed up Coco Chanel’s deep belief in the occult, talismans and on symbolism that continues to be an inspiration for the House of Chanel. You only have to look at some of the symbolism in her archive Parisien apartment to see that; the number 5 hidden in a crystal chandelier, bronze and alabaster lions (symbols of good fortune) and bundles of ears of wheat.

CHANELTRIP 054CHANELTRIP 094This season, Chanel reinterprets superstition with a surrealist spirit – mixing sumptuous tones of bronze, taupe and khaki with the shimmer of golden beige, intense pink or a burgundy palette. We see the good-luck duo (rouge coco and rouge coco shine lip shines) being joined by six luscious creme blushes in subtle and intense shades (from the soft beige of Destiny and the apricot tint of Presage to the fuchsia tint of Fantastic) that perfectly match the lipstick shades.

ROUGE COCO SHINE_87_Rendez-vousEasy to team, the shades come in pairs;  the intense blush pink of Affinite with Coco Shine Rendez-Vous’s glimmer of pink (above) and the soft pink of Blush Creme de Chanel Inspiration teamed with the subtle, pale Rouge Coco Shine, Instinct. Le Blush Creme de Chanel comes in a compact  (its neat form with mirror slipping easily into a make-up bag) with the smooth, glide soft feel of silk velvet and the depth and staying power as you’d expect from a premium brand like Chanel.

The all-seeing eyes have it with Chanel’s ‘Les 4 Ombres Mystere’ set. Muted, two-tone khaki/gold and ivory/gold play match for match as do the dulcet tones of the silvery, chalky taupes. Mascara and eyeliner comes in a bronze shimmer khaki for a deeply sexy, superstitious wink. Then there’s the single compact shadows that come in the light lavender of Hasard and the metallic taupe glint of Gri-Gri.

Chanel’s parting shot is to paint the town not red but milky pink with an underlying grey tone (Elixir) or darken up sophisticated talons with the gold shot khaki of Alchimie (below) or the charcoal grey of Mysterious.

LE VERNIS_591_Alchimie

Bewitched, dazzled and bewildered, this collection hints at Hocus Pocus for Autumn 2013.
